Pump failure halts operations at Kombat Mine

Trigon Metals has been forced to suspend underground mining operations at its Kombat copper mine following the failure of its two main dewatering pumps, the pumps critical to keeping the underground mine dry, failed on January 16, 2025.

To minimize possible damage, Trigon Metals is currently removing equipment and all miners have been evacuated from the underground locations.

“We are working to overcome this pump failure,” said Trigon Chief Executive Officer and Executive Chairman, Jed Richardson in a statement regarding the incident.

“I would like to thank the crew for acting quickly to put everyone’s safety on the job site first.”

Trigon stated that its intended deal with Horizon Corporation Ltd. is still on course in spite of the setback. Trigon has been reassured by Horizon, which had previously consented to buy its stake in the Kombat mine, that it will remain committed to the agreement. Along with other interested parties, both parties are collaborating to choose a course of action and deal with the incident’s effects.

“This situation is unfortunate, but we are optimistic about restoring operations quickly and continuing our work at Kombat,” added Richardson.

The Kombat mine is a key asset for Trigon in Namibia, where the company also holds interests in the Kalahari Copperbelt and other mining licenses. In addition to its Namibian operations, Trigon is active in Morocco, exploring copper and silver projects.

Trigon stated that it remains focused on safety and sustainability as it works through this challenge. Further updates will be shared as the situation develops.
