On 4 June 2025, Deputy Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, Gaudentia Kronje, delivered powerful remarks at the launch of the Rössing Uranium Sustainability and Performance Report. The event celebrated the longstanding contributions of Rössing Uranium, Namibia’s longest-operating open-pit uranium mine, to the country’s development.
Kronje saw the event as an opportunity to consider an organization that has been essential to Namibia’s industrial, social, and economic development. She underlined that the mining industry must improve livelihoods, encourage technological transfer, generate employment, and benefit communities in order to act as a catalyst for national growth. From the founding of the municipality of Arandis to its ongoing economic influence, Rössing Uranium has consistently contributed to this objective, she complimented.
Kronje praised the management of Rössing Uranium and the company’s largest shareholder, China National Uranium Corporation, for their outstanding financial performance and capacity to adapt to shifting market conditions. She cited new statistics from the Namibia Statistics Agency, which indicates that in February 2025, uranium was the nation’s leading export, accounting for 26.3% of total export revenue, or N$10.1 billion. She reaffirmed the previous statement made by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah after a visit to the mine: “We are too few to be poor.”
The Deputy Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy, emphasized that the profits of mining must be distributed to regular Namibians through expenditures in sports, education, jobs, and health. She praised Rössing Uranium’s efforts to improve the neighborhood, pointing up the recently constructed N$23 million police station in the DRC informal area in Swakopmund. She claimed that these acts demonstrate the mine’s unwavering dedication to Namibia.
In response to the growing debate around smart mining, Kronje called for finding a balance between innovation and social responsibility. She urged mining companies to use technology that boosts productivity while preserving employment. She emphasized that, despite the importance of raising production, job protection must always come first.
Additionally, he emphasized the sector’s obligation to practice environmental stewardship. In addition to praising Rössing Uranium’s conservation initiatives and general safety record, she urged other mining operators to put safety before production and to safeguard the environments in which they work.
Reflecting on the mine’s positive production year, Kronje concluded by commending all stakeholders in the mining industry for their contributions to Namibia’s economic growth and improved performance. Her address marked a moment of appreciation and continued commitment to sustainable development in Namibia’s resource-rich mining sector.
