Etango’s 2028 Production Target Brings Local Economic Stakes Into Focus

Namibia’s uranium growth ambitions are increasingly tied to the economic opportunities surrounding new mine development, with the Etango project expected to strengthen the country’s position in the global nuclear fuel supply chain. Operated by Bannerman Mining Resources Namibia in the Erongo Region, the project is targeting first uranium production by the end of 2028, with expected annual output of approximately 3.5 million pounds of uranium oxide.

As the world’s third-largest uranium producer, Namibia stands to reinforce its position in an increasingly important market. However, the project’s wider economic contribution will also depend on how effectively investment translates into employment, skills development and opportunities for domestic businesses.

Speaking at the official opening of the mine, Minister Amutse highlighted the potential for the project to stimulate local economies through increased demand for goods and services, support livelihoods and improve household incomes. The project’s existing workforce offers an indication of its local employment contribution, with 99% of the 629 workers currently on site being Namibians. Beyond direct employment, the development is expected to create opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises supplying the mining operation, while supporting skills development and broader economic activity.
