China’s ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, highlighted the significant strides made in bilateral relations over the past five years, underscoring a deepening partnership rooted in historical ties and expanding economic cooperation. Speaking with Eagle FM, Zhao reflected on the extensive support China provided for Namibia’s independence in the 1960s, a foundation that has fostered consistently close political relations.
The relationship was elevated in 2018 when Chinese President Xi Jinping and then-Namibian President Hage Geingob established the China-Namibia Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, a high-level framework designed to boost trade and economic collaboration.
Trade and Investment
China has long been a key trading partner for Namibia, with a focus on mineral resources. The partnership has solidified China’s position as Namibia’s largest investor. So far in 2025, trade volume has surpassed N$2 billion, making China Namibia’s third-largest trading partner after South Africa and the European Union. Namibia’s primary exports to China are dominated by mineral resources and agricultural products, with the country being the first on the continent to export beef to China. Namibia’s International Trade Statistics for July show that uranium is the top exported product, accounting for 26% of total exports.
Development and Capacity Building
Beyond trade, the partnership has yielded tangible development projects. The cooperation has led to the construction of nine schools, including the Namibia National Youth Training Center. Major infrastructure projects include the new airport road construction.
In a push for technological advancement, China has provided annual opportunities for 200 Namibians in science and technology fields to support local capacity building. The country also donated a satellite data receiving system to enhance Namibia’s remote sensing capabilities.
China’s engagement with Namibia is further supported by the Forum of China-Africa Cooperation, a key multilateral mechanism for deepening continent-wide collaboration. Additionally, a FAO program has brought eight Chinese agricultural experts to Namibia to train local farmers and advise the Ministry of Agriculture.
