The 4th General Assembly of the African Seismological Commission (AfSC) is being held in Windhoek, Namibia, putting the country at the forefront of seismology. This historic event, which takes place from February 24 to 26, 2025, is the first time Namibia has hosted this esteemed assembly of seismologists, geoscientists, and business leaders from throughout Africa and beyond. With an emphasis on regional and global topics such natural catastrophes, climate change, and sustainable resource management, the assembly provides a forum for discussing the most recent developments, difficulties, and possibilities in seismology.
The event was opened by Penda Ithindi, Executive Director of Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, who emphasised the value of seismology in tackling issues such as climate change and natural disasters. Additionally, he honoured Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the late founding president of Namibia, who died earlier in February. The assembly emphasises how seismology and geoscience work together, with Namibia’s century-old earthquake database being crucial to risk assessments for geotechnical engineering, mining, and building. Ithindi urged participants to promote new scientists and exchange expertise in order to improve the subject, encouraging cooperation and creativity.
In order to leave Namibia with enduring impressions of its warmth and beauty, attendees were also encouraged to explore the country’s culture and landscapes. Ithindi also exhorted attendees to take advantage of the gathering as a chance to network, exchange ideas, and establish cooperative alliances. In order to advance seismology and related sciences, he emphasised the value of creativity and the real-world application of research discoveries. Additionally, he commended the AfSC for its initiatives to advance diversity, especially among students, early-career researchers, and young scientists.
“It is our responsibility to nurture, mentor, and support the next generation of seismologists,” he said, encouraging seasoned professionals to share their expertise and experiences with emerging talents.
As the 4th General Assembly of the AfSC unfolds, it promises to be a transformative event for seismology in Africa. The assembly’s emphasis on cooperation, creativity, and capacity building positions it to advance the African seismological community internationally and open the door to a more secure and resilient future.
Namibia is proud to be hosting this intellectual conference and anticipates the long-term effects it will have on the continent and beyond.
