The Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) roadshow for the proposed Offshore Venus Field development is proving just how invested Namibians are in their country’s energy future.
NAMCOR, working with TotalEnergies, Impact Oil & Gas, and QatarEnergy, has been holding consultations in towns around the nation allowing ordinary Namibians to express their ideas, worries, and hopes for the large oil and gas project planned in Block 2913B, just off Namibia’s coast.
More than 100 people came together at the University of Namibia’s Noordhoek Campus in Keetmanshoop. More than 200 crammed the local community hall in Bethanie. Over 300 people crammed into the session, which ran four hours longer than planned, making Lüderitz the most attended yet. Many stayed late into the night, eager to interact with interactive exhibits and pose in-depth inquiries
“Our people are showing up, asking the right questions, and holding us accountable,” said a representative from NAMCOR. “This isn’t just a formality every voice matters.”
From concerns about environmental protections to conversations about job creation and local skills development, the discussions have been vibrant and deeply insightful. One young attendee in Lüderitz sparked a spirited dialogue when he asked how the project could support youth employment through training opportunities.
So far, nearly 600 Namibians have taken part in these sessions—and the roadshow isn’t over yet. Upcoming consultations are scheduled for Oranjemund, Walvis Bay, Windhoek, Swakopmund, and other key towns. There’s also a virtual consultation set for 6 May 2025, ensuring that every Namibian, no matter where they are, can take part in shaping this project.
“We’re at a critical moment,” the NAMCOR team emphasized. “This is when we listen and learn from the people who matter most—you. Your feedback will help us develop this field in a way that is not only technically sound but socially and environmentally responsible.”
