The global energy industry’s spotlight is firmly fixed on Namibia, a nation rapidly emerging as Africa’s premier exploration hotspot. To dissect this burgeoning sector, the African Energy Chamber (AEC), in partnership with Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy and Wood Mackenzie, will host a pivotal webinar, “Exploration Hotspot: Focus on Namibia.”
Scheduled for March 20th, the event promises to deliver crucial insights into Namibia’s vast subsurface potential, the key players driving exploration, and the broader trends shaping the country’s energy landscape. With a lineup featuring Maggy Shino, Namibia’s Petroleum Commissioner, and Dr Ian Thom of Wood Mackenzie, industry stakeholders can expect a comprehensive analysis of the nation’s energy future.
Namibia’s ascent began with Shell and TotalEnergies’ groundbreaking deepwater discoveries of Graff and Venus in the Orange Basin. Since then, a flurry of activity has seen over 20 wells drilled and nine significant discoveries made by industry giants such as Galp, Chevron, and Rhino Resources. This surge of interest reflects the immense potential of Namibia’s offshore basins.
The coming year is expected to maintain this momentum, with crucial wells like TotalEnergies’ Marula-1X and Rhino Resources’ Capricornus-1X currently being drilled. Further prospects at Kharas, Olympe, and Saturn signal continued investment and unwavering confidence in Namibia’s upstream sector.
The focus is shifting towards development, with TotalEnergies planning a massive 150,000-barrel-per-day FPSO facility on the Venus structure, and Galp evaluating a hub for its substantial Mopane discovery.
The webinar will delve into the significance of these deepwater finds for global energy markets, the strategies of key players, and the long-term outlook for exploration and development in the Orange, Lüderit, Walvis, and Namibe basins. Crucially, the discussion will also address the risks and challenges operators face as they transition from exploration to production, offering a balanced view of the opportunities and obstacles ahead.
“This webinar is a unique opportunity to engage with experts and gain firsthand insights into one of Africa’s most dynamic exploration frontiers,” says Verner Ayukegba, Senior Vice President of the AEC.
The event, structured to accommodate various time zones, will include a welcome address, a presentation on Namibia’s upstream landscape, insights from the Namibian government, and a Q&A session. As Namibia continues to attract global attention, this webinar is a must-attend for anyone seeking to understand the future of African energy.
