Canadian independent Reconnaissance Energy Africa (ReconAfrica) is ramping up its exploration efforts in Namibia’s Kavango Basin with the recent spudding of the Naingopo-1 well in the Damara Fold Belt. This comes as the company confirms its participation as a Bronze Sponsor at African Energy Week (AEW) 2024, underscoring its commitment to expanding Namibia’s hydrocarbon reserves and exploring new opportunities across the continent.
“ReconAfrica’s exploration efforts in the Kavango Basin affirm its commitment to discovering and developing new energy resources in Africa’s frontier markets, particularly focusing on the untapped onshore potential to unlock significant oil and gas resources,” says NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber. “The company’s efforts also align with broader initiatives to enhance regional energy security and stimulate economic growth through sustainable resource development.”
ReconAfrica has become synonymous with exploration activities in Namibia’s Kavango Basin, where it holds exploration licenses encompassing Namibia and Botswana. Working alongside the National Petroleum Corporation of Namibia (NAMCOR), the company has pioneered a data-driven approach, drilling several test wells since 2020 that have yielded encouraging results.
The latest Naingopo-1 well is expected to reach a total depth of around 3,800 meters within 90 days and is considered critical in establishing the overall productivity of the basin.
Building on the success of its Namibian operations, ReconAfrica views its participation at AEW 2024 as a strategic opportunity to connect with key stakeholders and explore new partnerships. The company is particularly interested in “farm-in” opportunities on promising onshore projects across Africa.
“AEW: Invest in African Energy 2024 provides a strategic opportunity for ReconAfrica to connect with key stakeholders, explore new partnerships and potentially farm-in to promising onshore projects across Africa,” the release states.
Countries like Angola, with its upcoming frontier licensing round in early 2025, and nations boasting established production infrastructure like Mozambique, Uganda, and Tanzania, are all seen as potential targets.
ReconAfrica will leverage its participation at AEW 2024 to share its technical expertise and provide project updates during industry-led discussions and presentations. The company aims to contribute to the continent’s journey towards energy independence and sustainable development by engaging with Africa’s leading energy sector stakeholders.
