The world is on the cusp of a clean energy revolution, and copper, the “metal of electrification,” is at the heart of it all. With demand for copper expected to skyrocket, Namibia, a country with untapped potential, is emerging as a game-changer.
Currently, established copper giants like Chile, Peru, and the DRC dominate the market. However, experts predict a global supply shortfall as demand outpaces production. This is where Namibia steps in.
Namibia boasts a rich history of copper mining, dating back to the early 1900s. However, exploration has lagged behind neighbouring countries, leaving its vast copper reserves largely untouched.
One major hurdle has been water management. Much of Namibia sits on an aquifer, leading to flooding in past mining attempts. But the tide is turning.
Canadian company Trigon Metals has successfully restarted operations at the Kombat copper project, leveraging existing infrastructure to revive previously flooded mines. Similar efforts are underway by Deep South Resources.
While Namibia has a long way to go to compete with established producers, the potential is undeniable. John Sisay, CEO of Namibian mining company Ongopolo, believes the country is perfectly positioned to capitalize on the e-revolution.
“Africa missed out on previous economic revolutions,” Sisay says. “This is our chance to claim our rightful place. Namibia has the copper, and now, with the right push, we can bring it to the market.”
Namibia’s stable political environment is another positive factor, but challenges remain. The recent ban on exporting unprocessed critical minerals, while beneficial for the domestic supply chain, could deter foreign investors. Additionally, significant investment is needed in processing facilities, which many mining companies may struggle to shoulder.
Despite the uncertainties, Namibia’s copper potential is electrifying. As the clean energy revolution unfolds, this nation with a rich history in the metal could very well emerge as a major player, finally claiming its place on the global copper map.
