The recently concluded Namibian International Energy Conference (NIEC) 2024 placed a strong emphasis on promoting “Namibian content,” a local content strategy designed to boost domestic participation in the country’s burgeoning energy sector.
Speakers at the conference, held from April 23rd to 25th, highlighted the importance of capacity building and well-defined local content policies. These elements were seen as crucial for maximizing the benefits of Namibia’s recent oil and gas discoveries. Collaboration between international companies and domestic businesses was identified as a key driver for achieving energy security and fostering economic prosperity.
The conference served as a platform for showcasing opportunities for Namibian companies to get involved in the energy value chain. A dedicated panel discussion titled “Promoting Local Content: Maximizing Opportunities in the Energy Value Chain” explored innovative strategies to unlock the potential within Namibia’s extractive sectors.
NIEC 2024 also functioned as a valuable space for knowledge sharing. International experts, like former Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board head Engr. Simbi Kesiye Wabote, shared best practices in local content development and implementation. This knowledge exchange is expected to aid Namibia in crafting its own effective Local Content Policy (LCP).
Namibia’s focus on local content aligns with the government’s efforts to establish sound petroleum revenue management legislation. This two-pronged approach aims to create lucrative business opportunities for both Namibian and international energy players, while ensuring the nation benefits from its natural resources.
