A significant shift towards sustainable mining is underway in Namibia, as Appian Capital Advisory LLP has acquired a controlling stake in the Rosh Pinah Solar Park from Emesco Energy. This strategic move will inject clean, solar-generated power into the operations of the Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation, marking a pivotal step in decarbonising the nation’s mining sector.
Namibia, a resource-rich country with vast reserves of uranium, copper, and diamonds, is poised to leverage its abundant solar potential to power its industrial heartland. Appian’s acquisition directly supports the Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation’s ambitious RP2.0 expansion project, which aims to dramatically increase ore production.
The solar park, now under Appian’s stewardship, will initially provide 30% of the energy needed for this expansion. Crucially, it will also secure a fixed energy rate for the mine, translating to an 8% reduction in energy costs over the next 15 years. This not only enhances the mine’s financial stability but also underscores the economic viability of renewable energy in the mining sector.
Appian’s vision extends beyond the current capacity. Plans are in place to triple the solar plant’s output from 5.4MW to 16.3MW. This expansion will significantly reduce the mine’s carbon footprint, cutting emissions by an impressive 14,000 tonnes annually – equivalent to planting 20,000 trees.
Emesco Energy will remain responsible for the operational management of the solar plant, ensuring a seamless transition and leveraging their expertise to facilitate the expansion. Appian’s experience in similar projects in Brazil will further bolster the project’s success.
This initiative holds particular significance for Namibia, a nation heavily reliant on energy imports. By boosting local energy production, the Rosh Pinah Solar Park will contribute to energy independence and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.
The move signals a growing recognition within the mining industry of the imperative to adopt sustainable practices. By harnessing the power of the sun, Namibia is demonstrating that economic growth and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable future for its mining sector.
